Trafigura Faces Criminal Charges Over Toxic Waste Dumping

Oil company Trafigura were today facing up to the prospect of having to face criminal charges for the the dumping of toxic waste in areas of Africa, specifically Abidjan near the Ivory Coast, causing a large amount of people to become sick. The company has already had to pay out for mass compensation claims by the people effected, but now face the criminal charges in the Netherlands after it was alleged that they had initially tried to dump the waste there.

 
IAG Forced to Write Off $365,000,000 Thanks to Compensation Claims

One of Australia's largest insurance companies has had to write off more the $350 million dollars due, in part, to an increase in personal injury compensation claims in the UK.


Fladgate Settles Izodia Case for £7,800,000

The law firm Fladgate have settled with the dot com firm Izodia for £7.8 million after it was alleged they breached their fiduciary duties by acting for both Izodia and their former director Gerald Smith, who had recently been found guilty of defrauding the company of over £36 million.
Number of Successful Personal Injury Claims Against Councils Drops
A survey that included over 75 councils spread across the country has revealed that the number of successful personal injury claims against local councils has fallen dramatically since 2004. The survye, carried out by consumer group Nowinnofee.co.uk, showed that between 2004-2009 the number of successful claims fell from 31% to 19%, despite an increase in the number of claims actually made.

Fresh Blow to the Campaign to Ban Referral Fees
A new blow has been dealth to supporters of a ban on solicitor referral fees after a new report for the Legal Services Board recommended that they be retained. The Legal Services Consumer Panels' report wanted increased transparency, regulation and more details on the nature of the referral fees, but deemed that they were perfectly legal and should not be banned.

Israelis Storm Turkish Aid Ship Bound for Palestine
Israeli armed forces have stormed a ship carrying almost 10,000 tonnes of aid to Palestinians today, resulting in 10 deaths and worldwide political outrage. The ship was heading to the Palestinian territories to highlight the poor efforts of the Israelis in providing aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and the Israeli forces made multiple efforts to force the ship to turn back before storming it.

The Supreme Court Sends Harmful Vaccine Case into Deadlock

The Supreme Court have sent a vaccine case into deadlock after the case became time-barred. Declan O'Byrne was given two anti-meningitis vaccines that his family claim have left him partially brain damaged. They initially made a medical negligence claim against Aventis Pasteur MSD, the distributor of the vaccine, within the strict ten year deadline for a claim to be made. However they were told that they needed to make the claim against the vaccine's manufacturer instead, and by the time they had the ten year limit had run out.


Gunmen Kill 30 and take more hostage in a Pakistani Mosque

A group of gunmen have taken hundreds of people hostage and killed 30 in an assault on two mosques in the Pakistani city of Lahore today. The attackers threw grenades and opened fire inside the mosques, before holding hundreds of worshippers who had gathered for Friday prayers at gunpoint.

A man has won the right to claim a half share of a house that he left 17 years ago, despite the fact that he had made no mortgage payments during that period and had also paid no child support for the son he had with his ex partner.

Ubani Case Resolved with £40,000 Compensation Payment

The long running Ubani case, in which David Gray, 70, was injected with a massive overdose of diamorphine by German doctor Daniel Ubani, has finally been resolved with the family of the victim receiving £40,000 compensation for his death as a result of medical negligence.
