Gunmen Kill 30 and take more hostage in a Pakistani Mosque
A group of gunmen have taken hundreds of people hostage and killed 30 in an assault on two mosques in the Pakistani city of Lahore today. The attackers threw grenades and opened fire inside the mosques, before holding hundreds of worshippers who had gathered for Friday prayers at gunpoint.
The attack was specifically directed at members of the Ahmadi sect, who are not officially considered Muslims by Pakistan, and believe their founder to be a prophet who announced himself after Muhammed. The group has been targeted by radical Sunni Muslims in the past, however this is the largest attack on them to date.
Police have reclaimed one of the mosques after a gun battle which saw one of the attackers killed and two others caprtured. However fighting still continues in a mosque in the Garhi Shahu district.
